Some people may describe him as a musical genius, others may think of him as an activist for peace, and still others may call him an Anti-American hypocrite. But though he was a very controversial figure, John Lennon was a hard-working, talented, and peaceful man who inspired and touched thousands of people through his songs. He once said, “We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve really got to look after it and nourish it.” Everyday, John Lennon watered the plant of love. He didn’t just give it water though, he gave it fertilizer too. He didn’t just give it any type of fertilizer either—he gave it Miracle Grow. Because of this, the plant grew and blossomed during Lennon’s lifetime. One of the many ways that Lennon watered the plant of love was through peace.
Throughout his life, John Lennon strived for widespread peace and love. He strongly opposed the Vietnam War and many people called Lennon Anti-American because of this, but he was really Pro-America. Lennon just wanted what he thought was best for our country—peace, love, and harmony. He wanted to unite the whole world in love. One of the ways he did this was through his songs. Lots of Lennon’s music was focused around peace, including the song “Imagine”.
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I%26#039;m a dreamer
But I%26#039;m not the only one
I hope someday you%26#039;ll join us
And the world will live as one.
These words were the beginning of a revolution. Not a revolution of hate, but a revolution of love. This brings me to another one of Lennon’s songs—“Revolution”.
You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it%26#039;s evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don%26#039;t you know that you can count me out
Don%26#039;t you know it%26#039;s gonna be all right
all right, all right.
This song is so true; everybody does want to change to world. When you’re a kid and someone asks you what you want to be when you grow up, you don’t say, “I want to be a couch potato and watch TV all day”, do you? No; you say, “I want to be a fire man and save people”, or “I want to be a veterinarian and help animals.” However, when people grow older and they actually try to change the world, they go about it in violent ways. What Lennon was trying to say is that it’s all find and dandy if you go and save the world, but if you do it in the wrong ways, it’s pointless. John Lennon didn’t just write songs about peace either—he also wrote lyrics that expressed the feelings of America.
Only a musical genius like John Lennon could accurately express the complex feelings of an entire nation. Even though it caused him much controversy, Lennon was never afraid to voice his opinion and stand up for what he believed in. Lennon once said, “My role in society as an artist and a singer is to try and express what we all feel, not to tell people how I feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.” This is exactly what John Lennon was—a reflection of America. One of the reasons he was so controversial was that people cooked up these elaborate stories of John Lennon the Anti-American, John Lennon the Communist, and John Lennon the________. But Lennon wasn’t pushing anything on us; he was simply a reflection of our own selves. If Lennon had wanted to push things on us, he would have gone into politics, but he wanted to do something else—he wanted to express the feelings of the United States through his lyrics. The truly amazing thing about these lyrics though, is that they will live on forever and find new meaning in every pair of willing and able ears. These inspiring songs have already changed lives for almost five decades. In a time when America was split, confused, and lost, John Lennon brought people together and gave them direction. In the midst of death and war, Lennon and The Beatles brought a beacon of hope and joy to the nation. They gave us happiness through their songs and encouraged people to work hard for peace.
Many of John Lennon’s lyrics were also inspired by his own life, his own ups and downs, his own accomplishments and failures, his own happiness and sadness. Lots of his songs were written about people close to him as well. Lennon had a very troubled childhood. His dad walked out early on and his mom died in a car accident when he was seventeen. One of Lennon’s songs, “Mother”, addresses John’s fears of abandonment. He sings “Mama, don’t go, Daddy come home!” repeatedly throughout the song and shows how much he wishes he could have had a happier childhood. Though many of Lennon’s songs were written about his own life, everyone can find meaning in them. For example, my dad started to listen to The Beatles in high school, and they played a large role in his life. The two songs that influenced him the most were “Paperback Writer” and “Let it Be”. These songs helped him to persevere when faced with tough situations and empowered him when facing day to day issues. The songs also helped him to work hard in sports. To this day, my dad is a huge fan of The Beatles.
Lennon’s life as a musician started early and progressed from there to become one of the greatest musical careers in history. At age fifteen, John received his first guitar and went on to create the Beatles. They continued on to become one of the best Rock and Roll groups ever. This was partly due to the fact that Paul McCartney and John worked very well together. While Lennon wrote the intense, bluesy parts of the songs, McCartney added a cheerful upbeat that made the music happier. The Beatles were very successful, but eventually the group fell apart. Lennon, however, continued his musical career as a solo artist and as a pair with Yoko Ono. Suddenly, on December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed. His death impacted America with the same intensity as that of John F. Kennedy. We all remember John Lennon as the smart Beatle who was assassinated, but sadly enough, that was exactly the way Lennon did not want to be remembered. In an interview, he was asked if he disagreed with a line in a song by Neal Young, “its better to burn out than to fade away”. John replied, “I hate it (the line)”. Lennon spoke about how he wanted to fade away “like an old soldier”, but instead he burned out like a candle in the wind. Nonetheless, John Lennon died like a soldier for peace.
John Lennon was the type of person that everyone either loved or hated. People loved him because he worked for peace, he was a famous musician, and he wrote some of the greatest songs in history. People hated him because he worked for peace, because he was a famous musician, and because he said some controversial things in his songs. But what we must all remember about John Lennon is that he was never afraid to stand up for what he believed in. He never backed down from a challenge, he always told the world what he thought, and he never cared what people thought of him. Lennon could have cared less whether or not he was a popular musician, and ironically, I think that is what made him so popular. Lennon was so out there, so far-fetched, he brought so many new ideas to America that people didn’t know what to do with him. People were afraid of his ideas, so they insulted, criticized, and ridiculed him. But no matter what anyone said about him, John Lennon was, and always will be, an honest, peaceful, musical genius and I hope that some of his love for the world can rub off on each and every one of you.
I%26#039;m writing a speech and it can only be five minutes.i need to cut out a bunch of stuff, so can u help me?
Well, the only thing I can really think of is to narrow down your topic. Are you writing about the effects Lennon had on society or about how he became a musician? A few phrases can be left out too. I%26#039;m not going to point all of them out, but a few times you have two phrases or sentences that convey the same message. It makes a good point, but also makes a long speech. I mostly just skimmed through, but I did find one grammar error. In the last sentence, you say %26quot;...Lennon was, and always will be, ...%26quot;
Consider revising this to %26quot;... was and always will have been, ...%26quot;
since he%26#039;s no longer alive.
or you could just read really really fast.
Nice essay, by the way. I liked it.
