Any advice on taking care of violets?

I am not good at taking care of plants. I got two beautiful violets as a gift at my office and I don%26#039;t want to kill them. I am keeping them at the office and I am by a window. Also, how often should I water them and how much?

Any advice on taking care of violets?
Regarding watering:

Water

African violets should be watered from above when the top layer of soil in the container feels decidedly dry to the touch. Always water thoroughly, until water runs through the drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Then wait l5 minutes and empty the drip plates beneath the pots: plants should never be allowed to sit in standing water. Many growers find that it is best to water in the morning with tepid water.
Reply:I%26#039;ve always heard to stick a rusty nail or screwdriver in the soil. Works pretty good for my African Violets. They are big and busy with plenty of flowers.
Reply:The best advice I can give you, since I am a lanscaper, is to grow your violets indoors, for the winter. Try planting them in pots. If you plant them in pot, the plant will get adjust to the soil, and if you place them near a window (where direct sunlight is presence), then you will create a green house for your lilacs. During the later spring, then plants your lilacs in mid-sun.
