Birthday gift for my boyfriend?

well today is my bf birthday and i ran out of things to get him. i have given everything like clothing, sneakers, nice shirts, dress pants, hats, jackets. i have taken him out and all that for the holidays and stuff. my question is do you think a bambu plant for good luck is okay.

Birthday gift for my boyfriend?
yes its most triumphant!
Reply:From my experience, boys don%26#039;t really like the wearable stuff except it%26#039;s the one they really desired. They really appreciated in you give them the things in their HOBBY because it means that you care for him and know the things that interested him.

2 years ago, I gave my boyfriend a Beer Kit because he really LOVE beer. Here%26#039;s the review http://www.cutiegadget.com/mr-beer-revie...

He said he really like it and until know he still busy making the beer.

The key is just to give something he LOVE
Reply:No offense but i think that is a stupid idea. You know him best so no one on here can really tell you what to get him. Just think of something creative. Im sure he will love it no matter what you get him. Again im sorry im not trying to be mean!
Reply:how about getting him something before the day of his birthday? talk about thoughtless.
Reply:what a bout a portrait of you and him

Birthday gift for Grandma?

Today is Grandma%26#039;s birthday! She%26#039;s 92 years old! Woo Hoo! We%26#039;re having a family party for her this weekend, and my husband and I have no idea what to get her. If we ask, she%26#039;ll be adorable and say %26quot;Oh, I don%26#039;t need anything,%26quot; so what do you think? I was thinking about flowers, or maybe a potted plant that doesn%26#039;t need too much maintenance. Any suggestions? She doesn%26#039;t wear jewelry, just so you know. Thanks for your help!

Birthday gift for Grandma?
As people age they tend to shop less and get chilled more. A nice light sweater is always good. At this stage in life, we certainly don%26#039;t need more things so fresh flowers which can be seen as an extravagant treat will certainly brighten her day and not require her to maintain or store them later.
Reply:Pay her electric bill for one month. That would be a wonderful treat for anyone. Report It

Reply:My mother-in-law lived to be 92 and it was difficult buy her gifts because her needs were so limited. She always loved pretty clothes and appreciated something new to wear. Maybe you Grandma would appreciate a new outfit? Most of all she will enjoy having you there for her party. Have fun!
Reply:I think a nice blooming plant would be lovely. Lots of them do not take too much attention.
Reply:I guess it depends on what her living arrangements are?

If she is still at home, perhaps a scented candle -

Or a gift card to her favorite grocery store . . .

Always a nice card is appreciated - which she can look at, over and over (we tend to do that stuff).
Reply:i would say something like a nice warm blanket or a comfortable robe or something of the sort. the elderly like to be warm and comfortable.
Reply:How about a photograph of all the family together.

We did this just before my mother in law died and we are

so glad that we had that last photo of us all to remember.

She loved showing it off and used to call it the picture of her tribe.
Reply:Bed clothes. A bed jacket if she is so inclined but my guess and experience with our seniors is just what she says is true and enjoy making the fuss over the day and help to make sure everything is put in its place and she is not over tired. Bless you for the attention.
Reply:Maybe some soft cozy slippers, a bed jacket, or a nice soft lap blanket. Tell Grandma Happy Birthday.
Reply:I got my grandmother a beautiful tray on which to take her meals to the couch (to watch the television). If your gram eats in the same glamorous way (actually, as many seniors do), a pretty TV tray might be nice... My grandmother LOVES hers!

p.s. I found mine very reasonably at a Villeroy %26amp; Boch outlet

http://eshop.villeroy-boch.com/us/shoppi...

p.p.s. happy B%26#039;Day Grams!
Reply:Don%26#039;t let her blow out the candles ... help her please!
Reply:Am not 92 but here are a few things I would like......A .Digital Photo Frame with a slide show of my love ones.......It would be nice to see pictures on it from my youth, my parents up to the day of the party and including the party....I also like it when one of my grandchildren, sons or husband remembers to buy me a corsage......
Reply:I agree with CC good idea. For X-mas My Kids gave me a portrait of the 10 of them. I smile every morning when I look at them. My Grandchildren look so beautiful. My son and daughter the husband and wife, and my 6 little rag muffins. What a joy.
Reply:Something pretty to keep her warm, like gloves or a scarf. Seniors are always cold. The other thing is prepared food item that they can just heat or put into their microwave if they live at home. Otherwise some baked goods or treats that she would never buy for herself.
Reply:My grandma will be 90 next month I got her a silver keepsake box and had it engraved with %26quot;Happy 90th Birthday Grandma%26quot; Might try something like that
Reply:Do you have a video cam? Everyone go on the video giving Gran some birthday wishes, and perhaps telling of something special they remember sharing with her over the years.

Birthday gift for a wealthy friend?

My friend is turning 34, he is a stock trader in NYC, which means he has almost anything he might need. What should I give him for his birthday? I%26#039;ve got two ideas: a chocolate card or a money tree plant shipped to him (since I live in Mia)

http://www.hersheygifts.com/prdSell.aspx...

http://ww32.1800flowers.com/product.do?b...

Any ideas?

Birthday gift for a wealthy friend?
The moneytree plant is a cute idea for a stock trader, especially if he enjoys live plants. Here is another cute idea...a box of decade classic candies. Here is the basket from the 80s. It includes all the childhood favorites http://www.amazon.com/80s-Decade-Box-Gif... The idea of reliving your childhood this way is very appealing to me.

80%26#039;s Decade Box contains: Nik-L-Nip Wax Bottles, Pixy Stix, Bit-o-Honey, Laffy Taffy - Watermelon, Jawbusters, Lemonheads, Rainbow Coconut Bar, Flicks, Tart %26#039;n Tinys, Lotsa Fizz, Atomic Fire Balls, Jolly Joes, Tom%26#039;s Peanut Butter Logs, Fizz Wiz - Blue Raspberry, Wonka Bottlecaps, Wax Fangs, Lifesaver Pops - Swirl, Bubble Gum Cigarettes, Smoothie Peanut Butter Cup, Zours, Wink Soda, Goetze%26#039;s Cow Tail, Candy Stix Cigarettes, Giant Sweetarts, Zero Bar, Charleston Chew Chocolate, Now %26amp; Later - Grape, Candy Necklace, Now %26amp; Later Cherry, Bubblicious Paradise, Freshen-Up Bubble Gum, Jungle Jollies, Good %26#039;n Plenty, Saf-T-Pops Swirl, Tiny Chiclets.
Reply:have sex with him?
Reply:small stuff that is really hand in his line of work(planners notepads) nice personalized office supplies like a nice pen cellphone minutes
Reply:I think your money tree plant idea is a really good one, since it ties in, as a pun, in a way, with his job. And if you are creative and want to add a whimsical touch, you could write a short little verse to go with it, on the theme of money growing on trees..........I think he%26#039;d love it!
Reply:I don%26#039;t know if yre wealthy or not, but the gift%26#039;s value is in its meaning. no matter how wealthy he is, just remembering him with a simple sweet gift would cheer him up.
Reply:You know I think what most people like when they get a gift is simply that you thought they were special enough to remember them. It is the love that we demonstrate to them through the gift, no matter what the relationship is. And what the gift is does not really matter. The true gift is the remembrance of the person.
Reply:Are you creative? Or maybe you can get something personalized. Make it something personal. Even a box of homemade cookies, something you did would mean so much more than a store bought gift.
Reply:i think a good gift would be u not a romantic thng at all but perhaps a nice dinner and then give him w/e but usually people who have it all want something simple...
Reply:Paris Hilton? I heard she is cheap.
Reply:Get him something money can%26#039;t buy - something you make yourself. Grab a box of crayons and draw him a funny card - he%26#039;ll be touched by the time and effort you spent, and the creativity you displayed.
Reply:I don%26#039;t much like either. Just send a cake or something nice from Harry and David. They have quality stuff.
Reply:When you have a wealthy friend, the best choice of gift is something unique and consumable. Find an interesting bottle of wine that struck your interest (don%26#039;t be intimidated, incredible wine can be had for less than $30). Chocolates are also a great idea, I recommend Vosges out of Chicago. In my opinion, plants are like giving someone a puppy. It%26#039;s like saying, %26quot;Here! I got you something that you%26#039;ll have to take care of for years to ensure it won%26#039;t die!%26quot; Unless your friend has a green thumb and enjoys plants, I%26#039;d recommend going to the %26quot;Beer of the Month%26quot; club.
Reply:i like the plant better.. he can put this on his desk as a decoration
Reply:make them give u money
Reply:some great things
Reply:make him a sort of care package of jokingly things if hes such a batcholer he is prolly in need of some stuff like that
Reply:A money tree plant would be ok....just make sure it%26#039;s expensive haha.
Reply:Here%26#039;s something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:

Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!

The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.

Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.

Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.
Reply:you cant go wrong with something edible, plus its the thought that counts!
Reply:Give him a roll in the hay.
Reply:usually the best gift is someones company, and It%26#039;s cheap, maybe try to go visit him, I bet he%26#039;d think it was a great present
Reply:I have a great idea. It%26#039;s nothing materialistic, so he may like it better than an actual present. But him a star. You can buy a star online and name it whatever you want. It will actually be named whatever you decide to name it. You will get a star map to show you where it is and all kinds of stuff. My friend did it for his girlfriend and i thought it was pretty cool. here is a link for you if you wanna check it out but there are a few other sites that do it too... shop around and see which one you like the best. i found a few sites just with a yahoo search. http://www.starnamer.net
Reply:I remember seeing something in a store that I thought was funny. I know he%26#039;s a guy, but I saw a bellybutton brush. On it, it read %26quot;For the person that has everything.%26quot; I don%26#039;t know if he%26#039;d find this funny, but it%26#039;s an idea.

What's a good housewarming gift for a bachelor?

I thought about a plant for his really sunny front porch, but don%26#039;t want to pressure him with keeping it alive. is there a good hearty plant out there? or maybe scrap that and get him a nice nitelight for the bathroom? (that%26#039;s my standby housewarming trinket). Any other ideas would be appreciated -- budget is no more than $25. Thanks!

What%26#039;s a good housewarming gift for a bachelor?
Cactus is good. Or a bottle of something (ex Vodka).

When you move into a new place you usually have no food or things need to be done to make the place comfy so a giftcard to the grocery store or to Home Depot is always good to help get things going.
Reply:I second the beer thought. Maybe a 6 pack of beer %26amp; a set of beer glasses.
Reply:Forget the plants, just get him beer it would go to better use a is always appreciated.
Reply:for 25 ucan get him a case of his fave brewskis, dudes always find that more useful than practical stuff--cuz the only %26quot;practical gifts%26quot; guys like r xpensive electronic gadgets n games.
Reply:A coffee pot and some good coffee, maybe a countertop container for the grounds/beans. A step beyond would be a travel coffee mug so he thinks about you on his way to work. . .
Reply:A Music System. He will surely enjoy it.
Reply:A small wine rack, like one to put on his kitchen bar, to keep bottles of wine in.

Why can't people use their heads when buying you a gift?

We had our office Christmas party on Friday, December 1st. My boss gave me a beautiful floor plant in a large ceramic pot. The plant is as tall as I am and probably weights 75 lbs. or more. I commute to/from work via bus and train. My round trip travel time per day is about 4 hours. I moved the plant in back of my desk and love looking at it every day when I%26#039;m at work. Finally the other day, my boss took me aside and asked me if I liked the plant. I told him I loved it. Then he asked if I loved it so much, why hadn%26#039;t I brought it home. Hello? How am I supposed to carry something this big and heavy on public transportation? My boss knows how I commute into work. I don%26#039;t drive so bringing my car into work one day to get the plant is not an option. Has anyone else out there experienced anything like this?

Why can%26#039;t people use their heads when buying you a gift?
Some people just don%26#039;t have the talent for picking out appropriate gifts....and some don%26#039;t care enough to bother. That is unrealistic of your boss to expect you to take something that big home on the bus and train.
Reply:i think they are thinking more with their wallet.

You should have told him that you can%26#039;t take it home on a train... regardless it was nice of him to do that for you... one should be thankfull for any gift they get.
Reply:I can%26#039;t say that I have experienced anything like this but I really think your boss thought that he was getting something that you would really like. The thought of how you get to and from work probably never crossed his mind. I really think he WAS using his head when he got you this for a gift. Maybe one day you could bring in your car to work and bring it home or just tell your boss that you would like to keep it at work so others can enjoy looking at it as well as you do everyday at work.

I really think Christmas isn%26#039;t all about what you recieve as gifts. It really is the thought that he put behind that gift. Just be thankful that he remembered you this holiday. Would you have reacted the same way if your boss didn%26#039;t get you anything for Christmas?
Reply:someones a little ungrateful of the thought behinde the gift.
Reply:Nothing I have experienced compares to that....that is wonderful.

People give me sugary food all the time and I shouldn%26#039;t eat it. When I was in rehab, they gave everyone mugs filled with hard candy, even the diabetics!
Reply:Yes. I had someone get me some foo foo bath crap. Just goes to show that some people are just not that observant...
Reply:People usually buy to others what they would like to have. So your boss bought you something he/she wanted and had imagined having this plant at home so it was only natural/normal in her/his mind that it suppose to be there.

Mother's Day Sunflower?

So I have a kindergartener, and like every kindergartener since the beginning of time, he has planted me the Mother%26#039;s Day sunflower in the plastic cup.

The thing is, I have never planted a thing in my life. Never.

Now last week I put it on the patio (we live in an apartment) to get lots of sun. (It is a sunflower, after all). A few nights later a huge storm came through and knocked it off the balcony, crashing it to the ground. The soil was half gone, and filled with water.

Being the mommy that I am, I didn%26#039;t want to break his heart and tell him that his very first MD gift was ruined, so I gathered my things, and snuckoff to Wal-Mart. I got new soil, and new seeds, and replanted. That was two days ago.

Today, I see a sprout! Is this the original seed? Is this the new seed? How can this be?! I just planted them two days ago! And now what do I do?

Jeepers creepers! Who knew one little gift could be so much work!

Mother%26#039;s Day Sunflower?
Well, it all depends on what temperature the pot is at. Since mother%26#039;s day was about 6 days ago, I%26#039;m going to guess that the sprout that came up was the original seed. I planted a bunch of sunflowers with my kids (and a whole bunch of other things) the day before mother%26#039;s day, and quite a few of the sunflowers already sprouted by the middle of the week. Sunflowers were the first thing to come out. They grow very fast. You will be amazed.

I doubt this is the new seed, but it is possible if the pot was kept very warm (like 75-90 degrees it could sprout that fast.

I would encourage you to not be afraid to get your fingers dirty and enjoy planting things with your kid. It is a really wonderful thing and if you have any questions about gardening, there%26#039;s always Yahoo answers, or you can send me a message and I should be able to help.

A thing about sunflowers: they love to be fed a lot. Once it starts to grow. Depending on what kind it is, if it shoots up, (some will grow over 10 feet tall) give it a generous amount of fertilizer. They deplete the soil really fast. Your little guy will be fascinated.
Reply:Well, I think you are awful cute! And a good mommy! The truth is, it doesn%26#039;t matter what is growing in the little pot. Just ooo and ahh as long he is interested. My kids had a pet rabbit that they just loved! One day about three months after I gave the rabbit away, my daughter came running in from school, saying. Daddy, I need to feed my rabbit! We went out into the back yard and was amazed to find the rabbit gone. We looked all over and finaly decided, that, the mommy must have missed it and came and took it home. End of story.
Reply:looks like your going to have one decorated patio this summer!!

Cain and Abel - why was God displeased with Cain's offering?

In Genesis, Adam and Eve%26#039;s sons both made offerings to God. Cain gave Him grains and plants and Abel gave a sacrificed animal. God liked Abel%26#039;s gift, but not Cain%26#039;s - which led Cain to be jealous and kill his brother. Why was God unimpressed by what Cain had offered in the first place? My Bible doesn%26#039;t really explain.

Cain and Abel - why was God displeased with Cain%26#039;s offering?
Since the Bible is not known for giving intricate details i.e. there%26#039;s no information about Adam and Eve between their expulsion from the garden and the birth of Cain, we don%26#039;t know whether they had certain %26quot;rules%26quot; to abide by when it came to offerings or whether it was just a matter of Cain not putting his heart into his.

The Bible does say that Able %26quot;brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof%26quot; whereas Cain %26quot;brought of the fruit of the ground%26quot;. It doesn%26#039;t say that Cain brought the firstfruits...just the fruit.

So, either because of %26quot;law%26quot; or because of a lack of caring, Cain gave an inferior offering.

This was a very good question and I hope I was able to answer it for you.
Reply:Abel, he brought of the firstlings of his flock ...the Best.

On the other hand with Cain it omits the first of the Fruits, I Believe He gave God the leftovers/Second Best because the Lord said “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.” Report It

Reply:Becaused the blood sacrifice symbolized sorrow and humility and was a rembrance of the sin.

Cains sacrifice symbolized praise and worship and pride which is what we like to do. But nobody wants to really do the sacrificing work God wants us to do.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Reply:Cain didn%26#039;t give with the right attitude. This confused me for many years also. I didn%26#039;t understand why God would except one offering and not another. But it%26#039;s all based on 1) our motive 2) attitude. Cain had issues with one or both of these. We serve a loving and just God he had a reason for not accepting Cains offering,.
Reply:Because Cain%26#039;s offering did not come with an offer of a head job
Reply:Read these stories as a sort of mythical history. The people who wrote them were nomadic shepherds and the underdogs (or upstarts, depending on your p.o.v.) in regional politics.

Torah is full of tensions between farmers and herders. And also reversals, with the second son receiving favour or blessing.

It%26#039;s a people%26#039;s story of themselves. Read it that way and it makes plenty of sense.
Reply:it wasn%26#039;t the animal, it was the heart he had while sacraficing to God. Cain didn%26#039;t care, and didn%26#039;t look for the best for God, just something he didn%26#039;t use, while Abble sacraficed only his best to God, with a willing heart.
Reply:Cain%26#039;s offering in and of itself was not what displeased God. It was Cain%26#039;s heart that was far from God. Obvious this came out when he killed his brother.
Reply:mine neither, makes you think he%26#039;s just an ungrateful brat doesn%26#039;t it? in god land it obviously isn%26#039;t the thought that counts but the price of the pressie. and this is the guy they%26#039;d have us worship?
Reply:Seems to me that this bible God is foolish.

It shouldn%26#039;t matter as long as it came from the heart.
Reply:Abel%26#039;s bringing the best of his flock and making an animal sacrifice showed that he appreciated the value of the best quality offering as well as the need for blood to be poured out for redemption.

Cain%26#039;s offering was not backed by the most upright motives. The fact that Cain became terrribly jealous to the point of homicide shows that he did not have the right heart condition.
Reply:An animal%26#039;s worth more. God wants to see you wasting the more valuable food, of course.

That%26#039;s why I sacrifice Alaskan salmon, fillet minion, and caviar. Then I put the fire out with some champagne.
Reply:if we try to read some verses in the Bible, we can learn that offering must be done thru animals without blemish, aminals have BLOOD. This is very important, becasue without shedding of blood no remission of sins as what the Bible clearly says in Heb 9:22.

%26quot;And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.%26quot; - Heb 9:22 KJV

Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof then he offered unto God then God respect Abel. why? becasue their is shedding of BLOOD.

Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD but God not respect Cain offering. Why? because the requirement of the offering must have BLOOD.
Reply:From early times men have presented offerings to God. In the first recorded instance, Adam%26#039;s oldest son Caon presented the firstfruits of the ground, and Adams younger son Abel, the firstlings of his flock. Evidently the attitudes and motives of the two brothers were different, for God approved Abels offering but looked with disfavor on Cains. Abel must have had faith in God%26#039;s promise of liberation through thepromised Seed and likely realized that blood would have to be shed, someone would have to be %26#039;bruised in the heel%26#039; so that mankind might be uplifted to the perfection that Adam and Eve had lost.(Ge 3:15) Acknowledging himself as a sinner, he was led by faith to present an offering requiring the shedding of blood, thereby accurately foreshadowing the real sacrifice for sins , Jesus Christ.- Ge. 4:1-4; Heb. 11:4
Reply:Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve, %26quot;in the course of time%26quot; brought offerings to the Lord (Genesis 4:3). Without doubt, they were doing this because God had revealed it to them. Some question, “How were Cain and Abel supposed to know what to sacrifice?” The answer is that God must have instructed them. It is clear that the offering was to be a substitutionary atonement, because we read in Hebrews 11:4, %26quot;By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.%26quot; When Abel came for worship, it was by faith that he brought his offering, %26quot;fat portions from some of the first-born of his flock%26quot; (Genesis 4:4). The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, and it was accepted.

His brother Cain brought %26quot;some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord%26quot; (Genesis 4:3). But on Cain and his offering the Lord did not look with favor. We do not know how He expressed His rejection, but it was evident. In Jude’s epistle, verse 11, we read, %26quot;They have taken the way of Cain,%26quot; referring to lawless men. This may mean that they, like Cain, disobediently devised their own ways of worship; they did not come by faith. Cain’s offering, while acceptable in his own eyes, was not acceptable to the Lord. The result was that Cain became very angry, and later, in the field, he killed his brother Abel (Genesis 4:8).
Reply:god does not exists.

god is non sense
Reply:One interpretation is that the story is purely metaphorical. Cain represented the countryside and pagan way of life. Able represented the religious faithful. So the writer was attacking the pagans and elevating the %26#039;faithful%26#039;.
Reply:there are not details . actually is a mythology of religion .
Reply:Abel brought the best of the flock he could find instead of bringing one that wasn%26#039;t the best. Cain just brought some average crops, not the best he had. Cain didn%26#039;t put much thought into bringing the best of what he had. He thought God wouldn%26#039;t notice that he brought average crops, while Abel sacrificed and brought the best he had.
Reply:Cain brought the wrong kind of offering because his heart was wrong. As a result, he brought the product of his hard work and not the offering that God had revealed He expected.

Hebrews 11:4, states, %26quot;By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaks.%26quot; Notice first that Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice, so the kind of sacrifice he offered was better than that of Cain. The offering of the herd was a picture of the coming sacrifice of Christ. The offering of the fruit of the ground was a picture of the works of man. Notice that it came from the ground that God had just cursed (Genesis 3:17).

But why did Cain bring the wrong sacrifice? Hebrews 11:4 also tells us that the sacrifice of Abel bore witness to the fact that he was righteous. Simple logic tells us that the sacrifice of Cain bore witness to the fact that he was wicked. But we do not have to rest solely on logic. 1John 3:12 states, %26quot;Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother%26#039;s righteous.%26quot; Though this refers to the slaying of Abel and not the sacrifice of Cain, it shows us the root of the problem--the wicked heart of Cain. Why did Cain have this wicked heart? Evidently, because he did not have the faith that Abel had in God.

God rejected the offering of Cain because it was the wrong offering. Cain brought the wrong offering because he rejected the revealed word of God. He rejected the word of God because his heart was wicked. His heart was wicked because he refused to have faith in God.
Reply:Because YHWH was an entity with some fairly distinctive carniverous tastes. A great part of the %26#039;Law%26#039; as supposedly written by Moses related to the handling of animal products, what to do with the fatty bits, the burnt bits and the juicy, succulent bits, he clearly wasn%26#039;t a bit interested in the vegan diet.

What Ornament/Gift do You Hate But Keep/Put on Display Because it was a GIFT?

I think we all have at least one from the tasteless to the wind-up mechants

I have a hideous artificial plant thing that lights up, Mum bought it. I would prefer to give it to charity BUT!!

So what%26#039;s your secret hate?

Thaks for taking part! :))

There%26#039;s this doll in my bedroom that my grandma brought me back from Poland. I feel like its eyes watch me walk around my room. I keep it near my 2-story window so that if it ever tries anything suspicious, I can just knock it out the window. The only reason I keep it is because I have a tiny bit of Polish blood in me, and it reminds me of my heritage.

What does your religion say about loving the natural world?

Is a love of the animals and plants ever mentioned?

I love and respect, and try to conserve, birds, animals and plants from around the world and see the earth as ther greatest gift we could have been given- but nobody of a religious orientation ever seems to discuss anything apart from human life.

Is a love of the natural world (and the vocation to defend and preserve it) smiled upon in your religion? Can you provide empirical back-up to your claims?

Thanks!

What does your religion say about loving the natural world?
I%26#039;m a wiccan and my personal orientation of this religion is almost completely earthly based. Treat the world with the respect it deserves.
Reply:I garden for food and beauty...both of which I share. I also respect and enjoy observing animals, birds, insects etc that God has given us and imazingly enough it%26#039;s all tied together. Never thought I%26#039;d like bugs until I learned why they are here and the job of each so having respect for all of God%26#039;s creation isn%26#039;t really a spiritual struggle for me.

I would think where dogmatic practice is going on there could be no respect present from those who are very closed minded to their surroundings. Some people just don%26#039;t think outside the box and mistakingly see those who notice as worshipers of the earth . Starting with an heirloom seed God given to fall to the earth to reproduce that of which allows stir-fried vegetables on the table...imagine that, food falling from the sky ;)

Look at all the churches....are they really without beauty on the outside? Do they let grass go to weed/seed and landscape perish void of flowers and trees that is sometimes preserved via transplant? In most cases I would say no so I wouldn%26#039;t allow those who claim not to have respect destroy your God given interests. Just because some individuals wouldn%26#039;t get caught dead with dirt under their fingernails yet ironically, we all need to eat, doesn%26#039;t mean green thumbs should ignore their calling. Every natural gift that God designed requires food right down to our soil and we should all respect those gifts.
Reply:Most Pagan religions are nature-based. The Old Ways require an understanding and acceptance of the rhythm of the universe. In addition, some religions of Man require a deep respect for the natural world and its inhabitants (Buddhism and Taoism, for example)
Reply:Its says that the world has been given to us and we should look after it, but we are allowed to eat the animals, but not allowed to be cruel or kill them unnecessarily.
Reply:No as long as you have not started placing the needs of people on an equal level of human beings, with animals. Should bears be allowed to come into areas where people live or rodents given precedence over a farmer and his crops? Genesis 3:17, Romans 1.

In fact in Genesis God told Adam to take care of the world...to be friends with the world is to be an enenmy of God and actually defy the Natural laws of God through inordinate affections...Hebrews 1:4,Colossians 3:5
Reply:I%26#039;m Wiccan. My religion has a great deal of love and respect for the natural world. It even recognizes that we aren%26#039;t above the natural world, but part of it. Nothing is put on this earth solely for us to use. My religion teaches that without nature, we are nothing and would cease to exist.
Reply:Not only is it not mentioned - its antithetical to the ideas in the bible. If you are ignorant enough to believe it was all put here for our benefit then there%26#039;s nothing wrong with making any animal go extinct unless we need it for some reason such as food.

Its so egocentric. I doubt very many christians give a damn about the environment. One of the problems is best shown with george bush senior%26#039;s response to a question if he was worried about damaging the ozone and effecting the climate - he replied he didnt think it mattered since the rapture was going to take place soon.
Reply:My religion says that we should indeed love the natural world, and that even plants and animals have souls. But I%26#039;m Wiccan. You seem to be hearing from a lot of us :-)
Reply:nohas ark , claim back up, yes the earth is currently crying for us to help her shes having to much global warming
Reply:I am a Catholic, and the world and and everything in it is a sign of God%26#039;s love and gift to mankind. It also shows a little of His awesome power.
Reply:Nature is what our God has created. Christians are very much into the study of nature and the preservation of it. Jesus used illustrations from nature continually to teach His doctrines. Most christians that I know have real love for nature.
Reply:that sounds like my belief system

I am wiccan
Reply:In our religion Islam, it is said that nature is creation of almighty Allah, that each and everything points out towards his single ultimate Creator of all Allah, as signs of His ultimate quality of being a Creator.

Azalea recieved for Valentine's gift, what do I do with it ?

Stop laughing..... I%26#039;m serious. It%26#039;s a pretty little plant, exploding with intermingled pink and white blooms and I would like to plant it in my front flower bed, come spring.

Is there anything I should do for the plant over the next few months to keep it healthy and get it ready to bloom again in the spring ?

Apologies if this is truly a novice question, but I usually buy my plants when they are in season, so I%26#039;m at a bit of a loss, as to what, if anything, needs to be done.

Azalea recieved for Valentine%26#039;s gift, what do I do with it ?
KARMA--check my second modificatiuon PLEASE!

I love azaleas. They are really nice plants that generally like part shade. You should get a soil test done first. A cheapy kit, if nothing else. Azaleas like soils that are acidic.

You can go ahead and plant it now and not wait until spring. The ground will protect it%26#039;s roots better than a plastic bucket. Get a bag of mushroom compost (NOT potting soil). Dig a hole that is about 3x the diameter of the pot the azalea is in now and no deeper than the pot is tall. Put enough compost in the hole to fill it about halfway. You will need to mix the compost with the original dirt. This will give the plant something to munch on when it is growing.

When you take the plant out of its pot, make sure to break up the rootball. Cut off any large roots that are growing in a circle around the rootball. If you do not, the roots will continue to grow in that manner, eventually strangling the plant. Also, don%26#039;t be afraid to use your shovel to make 4 (depending on the size of the pot) chops on the sides of the rootball. You will not harm the plant and this will make new feeder roots grow. The plant needs to know that it is OUT of that pot and FREE!!!!! When you put it in the ground, spread the roots out and make sure to leave the very top of the rootball above the ground. You can do this by leaving the top half-inch above the groundline. Add dirt in a mound to build up if necessary. Plants breathe through their roots and if the rootball is covered in dirt, the roots will suffocate. Pack the dirt down around the plant and water. You can add more dirt if needed. You can then put mulch around the plant, but make sure the mulch is about 3-5 inches away from the trunk of the plant. This will keep fungus and other crud from growing in trapped moisture and killing your azalea. The mulch will also help to both keep moisture in the ground for the plant and help keep the roots cool in the summer. Use something organic, which will have the added benefit of adding a minimal amount of humus to the ground for the azalea.

You will need to water it about once a week, to the equivelent (sp?) of one inch of rain. (Unless it rains a lot, then you won%26#039;t have to water.) I suggest drip irrigation as you can be sure the plant is geting the water it needs, but if you have a sprinkler, water it when it would normally get wet from dewfall. (Between the hours of 1am till 8am) This will keep exposure to moisture to a minimun and help protect it from different funks %26amp; cruds. But be sure to check the soil every now and then to make sure it is moist enough. Just stich a finger where its roots are and see how the soil is doing.

READ THE TAG. Put it where it can grow freely. Please don%26#039;t put a plant that grows 15%26#039; tall under a window that is 5%26#039; off the ground so you have to butcher it every year to see out of the window. That is just stupid.

A 10-10-10 fertilizer should be pretty good for it, but don%26#039;t fertilize until after the last chance of frost. Nitrogen encourages leafy growth and a hard frost can damage or kill a plant if it grows too early.

If you need to prune it, do so after it blooms, as they set flower buds in the late summer to fall, depending on the variety. There are quite a few. Read the tag.

Get in touch with your local Master Gardeners (where you can get a soil test done) if you have more questions, or find a reputable nursery/garden center in your area. Stay away from box stores. Most of them couldn%26#039;t find their faces with both hands if they got hit in the nose when it comes to plants.

*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*

I forgot! If you are going to have a freeze/frost once it is outside, then get a old sheet or blanket to cover the azalea with. Nothing that won%26#039;t breathe. (Plastic=bad.) This will help protect it from frost damage.

And you can%26#039;t really grow them indoors unless you have a sunny window. I asked around at work. It%26#039;s not really a good idea. They won%26#039;t bloom like they will outside, if at all. You may could just keep in indoors until it stops blooming. Don%26#039;t let the soil dry and don%26#039;t let it sit in water. Root rot sucks greatly for plants.

Once you plant the azalea, you CAN let the plant get established and cut flowering branches off to bring inside for arrangements in a vase or an old jar or whatever.

Don%26#039;t know where you live but go to hgic.clemson.edu and find the shrub section and look up azaleas. Good website for SC. You may could find a link to your state%26#039;s university?

Keep asking the questions. I like questioning my assumptions, especially the ones I didn%26#039;t know I had.

$%$%$%$%$%$%$%$%$%%$%$

After modifying my answer to your question, another co-worker mentioned that the azaleas that are in bloom now have been forced in a greenhouse and may not survive if planted outside now. It depends on where you live. If in lower Florida you should be fine, but if you are in Virginia, then keep it inside until spring gets here.

However, I stand by my answer as far as planting when you do. You usually do not need to wait until spring to plant anything you buy. The fall and winter plantings are really good because the plants can set roots and get established without having to deal with heat and drought stress as well.

I am sorry that I was not entirely correct, and I hope you have not planted your gift yet. Keep it indoors in a sunny location and make sure it does not dry out. You could give it a quarter %26#039;dose%26#039; of a water soluable 20-20-20 fertilizer once a month until the temperature in your area warms up.

I tried to email you.....
Reply:Just a late comment here. Most of the time, holiday gift plants like miniature roses and azaleas are special miniature hybrids grown in greenhouses. Most of these will die if planted outside. Good luck with yours Report It

Reply:March begins the planting season for milder regions in the south and west. Azaleas are more widely adapted to warm summer temperatures and can grow in all regions of the U.S. except the desert southwest and areas with very cold winters. Most azaleas completely cover themselves with early spring flowers. They usually grow three to six feet high.

Choose a planting site with rich, well-drained, acidic soil.

Plant in area with light filtered shade. Avoid hot, dry or windy sites.

Before planting, generously amend soil with organic matter, such as compost. If it’s too alkaline for azaleas amend with sphagnum peat moss to increase acidity, or plant in raised beds or containers.

Plants will succumb quickly in poorly drained soil. Check drainage by filling the planting hole with water, let it drain and fill it again. If the hole doesn’t drain overnight, it is best to plant in raised beds or containers.

After planting, apply a thick layer of organic mulch and keep soil lightly moist, never letting plants dry out completely.

Continued care for your azaleas includes fertilizer and insect control.

You can check out this website for detailed information. I just gave you the basics. We have 3 large ones in our front yard.
Reply:Oh man, this is brave...

Right then. I had the same happen to me a few years back. STOP LAUGHING! I was as clueless as I was surprised when I received it, but I love living things and wanted to preserve it. So I went ahead and planted it in my garden and did all I could to nurture and protect it and... well, it died. I mean, it wasn%26#039;t even a near run thing; it just flat out DIED, as in doornail dead, as in you stupid MALE animal with the gardening technique of an orangutan dead, as in why the hell didn%26#039;t you get some expert advice? dead.

Anyway, I%26#039;m not trying to discourage you so... just take these good people%26#039;s advice and see if you can have better success than Mr. Blackthumb! :(

Update: Um... glad to be of *cough* assistance?
Reply:godsowndi has it right. Keep it in the pot and indoors until threat of freezing has passed. In our neck of the woods there is a LOT of clay in the soil so it%26#039;s recommended to use a good potting soil when starting a new plant and to dig your hole approx. 3 X the size of your pot
Reply:When the threat of freezing is passed go ahead and find a place in your yard for it that get strong, but indirect sun for most of the day. Your local nursery should have a good brand of fertilizer specifically made for azaleas, use this according to package directions and be sure and protect it well during any drop below 35 degrees.
Reply:I believe you can leave it in the pot til Spring comes. Water it regularly and leave it near a window with lots of sun. In the Spring, you can plant it outside.
Reply:Definetely wait to Spring to plant it. They are very, very beautiful plants and smell wonderful. I bought one for my Mom one year. I will see if I can find the photos and I will post them on the web for you.

Here are some good tips on planting them though.

If Christ were to return tomorrow, will He judge us on the the condition of the Earth?

The meek are to inheret the earth, as God%26#039;s gift to them ... which is now poluted and many species of plants and aninals are extinct or getting close to extinction. Humanity%26#039;s race for technology and simplicity has made the earth somewhat of a less than perfect gift, in my opinion.

If Christ were to return tomorrow, will He judge us on the the condition of the Earth?
Each of us are judged on what we did with the time, health and wealth that God blessed us with. If we had a hand in harming our environment, we will be judged accordingly, and if we did our best to help our environment, we will be judged accordingly. No one will have to worry about being held accountable for another%26#039;s sins, and no one but you can account for your own self.
Reply:No because after God returns to the earth to collect the Christians he will begin to destroy the earth and after seven more years of trials and plagues and stuff he will return again collect the newly saved Christians and then there will be a war with Satan where he will be thrown into the lake of fire (hell) forever. He then will create a new heaven and new earth that is perfect.
Reply:He%26#039;s bound to be please that we got rid of the dinosaurs thousands of years before his old man created the earth.
Reply:No he is going to judge us according to what we did with his son, Jesus. Did you accept him or not.
Reply:the earth thats here today isnt the earth he%26#039;s speaking of. there will be a new one, per the book of revelations.

We were told to be good stewards of what was given to us, and to go out and subdue the land, but that was before it was cursed and like man began a long death bound journey.

I believe we will we judged for everything we did that was wrong. If it was wrong to throw a mc donalds bag from the car window and polute the road ways that others have to share with us then we will be judged.

But it also says to live by the laws of the land, and if the laws require that we provide electricity for our families and cart our waste products to a land fill then we will not be judged for it.

I think the bigger question is what state your heart was in durring every moment of your life, since God judges by the heart. the time for judgement is now for the church, by the way. When christ returns we will be rewarded according to how we were judged in our lives.
Reply:He will judge non-believers as to what is written in the books.

Prayers to you and yours. %26lt;%26gt;%26lt;
Reply:God knows we are responsible for the Earth and the condition of what it is in today. He also knows the condition of what it is in is the result of the choices man (and woman) has made. We are humans created by God and we have been given the gift from Him to make choices...good and bad. He encourages us to make the right decision, but lets us do as we will. In the end, we are responsible for where we are sentenced to live out eternity. However, as far as the condition of the Earth goes....we will not be judged for that, but instead for the sins we committed that caused the condition of the Earth, of us, of our loved ones, etc.
Reply:Yes I believe he would be disappointed in the many ways we abuse the earth-but I think all those animals and plants that are no longer here will be here then and the air will be fresh and clean-A NEW EA RTH! A PEACEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL EARTH!
Reply:He will judge us on whether we are His followers or not by whether He reads our names in the Book of Life.
Reply:I%26#039;m with blulnr - we%26#039;re not that important to Him - we just think we are, like any little kid thinks he%26#039;s the big deal
Reply:Nah, he%26#039;d probably just hit a strip club and have a few beers.
Reply:I bet He would, humans have totally upset the balance of this earth, and done away with trees, animals, birds, etc.
Reply:We will give an account for all the deeds good or bad we have done.
Reply:Seek him and you will find him and the answers to life questions.
Reply:No. He will not judge us on the earth%26#039;s condition.

He understand%26#039;s the earth%26#039;s condition.

He knew the earth would be in such a bad /polluted situation. And, He would make new earth and new world.

He would judge on the basis of forgiveness of our sins. Just :

trust and believe that Jesus died for your sins, and rose again on the 3rd day. And then do not commit sins. Invite Him to rule your heart. The bible says :those not believign Him are already judged. But, those just believing He dies and rose again for our sins, won%26#039;t be judged.

This is the basis on which He will judge yo and me.

It%26#039;s so simple to believe and follow Him.

Just pray in your own wordds, that%26#039;s all you need to do to escape judgement.
Reply:he would judge on the condition of your life.

House blessing gift for my b/f.?
A %26quot;Mother-In-Law%26#039;s Tongue,%26quot; sansevieria, is a really hardy plant that thrives on neglect. In fact, the only way I know to kill one is by overwatering it. They do well in all different kinds of light, and they seem to like being rootbound. They are as close as it gets to virtually maintenance free.

Reply:An aloe plant is a great man plant! They are so very hard to kill. You only need to water them once a week or two. They are great to use for burns if needed too! Reply:succulents. put an attractive variety together in the same clay or ceramic planter. almost impossible to kill, unless he%26#039;s the compulsive overwatering type, which most guys aren%26#039;t. start him out with some good quality potting soil, like black gold, not the supermarket junk, and mulch in the top with decorative pebbles. should last him a very long time, even with neglect.

Feng shui for prosperity and wealth?

My friend has converted her double garage into a studio for art students. I am wanting to buy her a gift for this new adventure and something lucky. Lucky plants? Money frogs? Buddah with money bags? The only thing is they are entering straight into the garage, not going through the house? The garage door is kept open, unless raining, and there is two doors running horizontally to garage line, one goes into the house, the other goes outside and has a little bit of stained glass with a blue wren on it. Thank you! x

Since your friend%26#039;s venture is creativity related, go for Na Zhou, Leader of Immortals which is great for those in the artistic stream: http://www.smilingbamboo.com/prodbyviewd...

Hope this info helps!
Reply:A very good gift would be a bell or chimes that sounds everytime the door opens, but this is not going to work in this space as the door is always open. If your budget runs to it, you can%26#039;t get better than a little fountain - the ideal location would be the top left area as you enter the garage. Running water is fantastic for prosperity and wealth. Also, a chunk of green malachite in this area would be excellent for prosperity. This feng shui webpage might give you some more ideas:

Reply:You could buy her a crystal and she could hang it above the doorway inside.
Reply:Buy her a broad leaf plant.
Reply:i%26#039;ve seen asian friend give buddhas with large bags as feng shui gifts before
Reply:You could have candles of different size on a square of rectangular plate and place stones or sand around them. Mirrors, or even chimes, something that is light, something that reflects light. A picture of the five elements, wood, metal, earth, fire, and I believe air. You could have anything with water, possibly a fish bowl, or a bowl with different colored glass balls. Find out when her birthday is and then go on line to find out what her element is by her birth date. You could get her something that relates to her element. Maybe you could even give her some calendar telling which element is for different birthdays. Plants are wonderful for feng shui, find something in earth colors and work from there. Good luck, it sounds like your friend has a place to live where I would like to live. How fun! Have a good time finding something, there are lots of different ideas on the Internet.

Any advice on taking care of violets?

I am not good at taking care of plants. I got two beautiful violets as a gift at my office and I don%26#039;t want to kill them. I am keeping them at the office and I am by a window. Also, how often should I water them and how much?

Any advice on taking care of violets?
Regarding watering:

Water

African violets should be watered from above when the top layer of soil in the container feels decidedly dry to the touch. Always water thoroughly, until water runs through the drainage holes in the bottom of the container. Then wait l5 minutes and empty the drip plates beneath the pots: plants should never be allowed to sit in standing water. Many growers find that it is best to water in the morning with tepid water.
Reply:I%26#039;ve always heard to stick a rusty nail or screwdriver in the soil. Works pretty good for my African Violets. They are big and busy with plenty of flowers.
Reply:The best advice I can give you, since I am a lanscaper, is to grow your violets indoors, for the winter. Try planting them in pots. If you plant them in pot, the plant will get adjust to the soil, and if you place them near a window (where direct sunlight is presence), then you will create a green house for your lilacs. During the later spring, then plants your lilacs in mid-sun.

skin disease

Those of you who care about the earth-Do you realize the dire importance of reducing water consumption?

In case you havent noticed, our mother nature has soved this problem for us! She is trying to take care of us! On a regular basis (in most areas) she provides us with plentiful amounts of water which she showers down upon us from the sky.

Yet still, so many people are bathing with the water that comes out of their bath tub spickets. Why not use the water that mother nature has provided for us, and not let it go to waste?

I find it a wonderful thing to collect this rain water and use it to bathe in. If your extra resourceful and caring, as I am, this water can be kept and used to water your plants.

Do you make use of the wonderful gift of water that mother nature gives to us? if not, wont you please consider it?

Those of you who care about the earth-Do you realize the dire importance of reducing water consumption?
Haleluyah ,here is my contribution to support your question.

WATERSHORTAGE

Why should we all be responsible for saving water?

because there is so little that we can use

------------------------------...

25% of the planets surface is land

75%of the surface is water and it is rising

------------------------------...

97%of the Earths water is salt

fresh water is only 3% of all the Earths water

most of it is beyond out reach

now much ice is melting and running into the seas fresh water lost for ever.

STORAGE or Location of % of the fresh water

ice and glaziers 74%

groundwater 800 meters + 13.5 %

groundwater less than 800meters 11.o%

Lakes 0.3%

soils 0.006%

Atmospheric in circulation 0.0035%

rivers 0.03%

frozen land or permafrost is not included and represent an unavailable storage of 40%

so of the 3% about 11.6 ,is easily available to us ,in rivers, lakes and ground water surface aquifers, more and more of this is becoming contaminated

overpopulation of an extra 70 million people a year (increasing all the time )and expanding agriculture ,which uses 70% of available potable water supplies ,has brought the good(sweet) water suplies to critical levels ,some countries have been in trouble already quite a while .

now climate change and desertification because of irresponsible agriculture ,overgrazing and deforrestation is damaging world fresh water production .

it is a good reason for concern and if we do not rectify matters by changing agricultural methods ,reforrest ,stop deforrestation, become more economic with water use ,stop producing more people ,stop wasting and contaminating water, we will be in serious trouble all round

and could end up looking like Mars

WATER POLUTION

FIRSTHAND CONTAMINATION

Rivers and Lagoons

millions of batteries are thrown in the rivers and Lagoons by night fishermen

1 small penlight battery contaminate 10.000 litres of water

raw sewage added to water flows like cannals and rivers ,

trash dumped on rivers edges ,

Industry contaminates practically unchecked

farmers using agro chemicals (fertilizers ,herbicides %26amp; pesticides)then deforrest and the rains washing the topsoils impregnated with contaminants into the rivers

thousands of women that do the washing in rivers using harmfull detergents.

farmers dump acidic coffee husk into the waters which kills millions of fish ,

on the coasts

oil spills that contaminate coastal waters,

Oceans

industrial wastes that are dumped into deep oceanic trenches

SECONDARY POLUTION

changes in water temperature enhances harmfull algae,(remember the red tide)

and kills many fish who are critical to temperature ,when sea water enters lagoons here in Mexico many fish die ,due to sudden temperature changes

and these are some of the things we can do

SOLUTIONS

wetlands like swamps have always been Natures natural filters for natural water flows, aquatic plants clean the water ,the anchored plants as well as the floating ones

we should redesign wetland flora with in natural water systems to help contra contamination.

stop sewage systems that connect to natural water flows ,forbid and police the dumping of rubbish on waters edges ,

the best way is through the educational systems ,starting at kiddy schools and rising in intensity with progression.

but in Mexico this is not accepted because this kind of education is not in the ciriculum.

In short the ways to protect the waters is

laws and punishment ,government vigilence ,education ,

alternative farming methods away from using chemicals ,which eventually end up in the ground water supplies

to merely clean polution or try to clean is never effective because of population growth ,it gets worse by the year ,an impossible task

we must attack at the roots and that is the contaminating mentality

EFFICIENT WATER USE

IN THE HOUSE

one can connect the sink straight to the toilet sistern and so use the water twice ,first to have a shave and then to flush the toilet

also if you bend the ball valve you can regulate the level of the sistern

and always have your grey water and black water seperate

so that the sink and shower water goes directly into the garden saving on irregation and at the same time ,making the sewage smaller and easier to deal with ,this also goes and iregates the garden but via a sitern of two compartments and a french drain ,on which you plant trees,

ON THE LAND

economic systems of irregation like drip irregation

and design using a lot of stone walls ,that condense water in the night

and planting leafy plants for the same purpose

building wind breaks ,to counter act the drying effects of the wind and farm towards agro forestal ,using as many trees as posible to limit evaporation .using shade nets before we have tree cover

and use MULCH

by cutting down the weeds before they produce seeds and leave them where they fall, they will cover the ground and put even more organic matter on top,you can use saw dust, leaves green or dry,and when you plant make a little space and plant in the mulch.this is the easiest quickest and by far most benificial way(for the quality of you soil)to prepare the land for planting

to prevent weeds from coming all you have to do it turn out the lights, you can even use cardboard or black plastic(this is good for strawberries because they will rot if they touch humid ground, and the bugs can get to them).

mulch is the same principal as compost but it includes the whole garden surface

the top part of the soil where the topsoil is being produced houses a world or microbiotic life.

Mulch is organic material green or dry that covers the ground, the thicker the better the composting process will turn it in to black topsoil

the humidity is preserved underneath and promotes the devellopment of worms(their exists no better compost than their excrements)and a variety of micro biotic life which together with the mulch produce more topsoil.

the mulch also keeps the ground temperature even and guards against the impact of the rain ,which would other wise brings salt to the surfave if on unprotected land

Mulch also prevents the soil from drying out because of the sun and,

WATERHARVESTING

the natural way of nature is to evaporate moisture for clouds and this gets blown to places with less water any way ,what obstruct the clouds from getting to deserts ,tend to be mountains that are in the way,

but generally speaking ,the normal weather patterns spread rain evenly over the planet to balance out the temperatures and humidity.

As far as catching rain is concerned ,we do this all the time ,and have done so already since Babylonian times, and is a part of the more advanced Agriculture, that existed with the Egyptians,Central ,and south American indigenous peoples, and many others ,today we call this water harvesting.

In Permaculture the rule is to harvest water to the point of Zero runoff.

this means that all of the rain that falls on an area is absorbed by the terrain and not a drop leaves it.

by building dams, ponds or swales, with interconecting ditches,

if there are enough of these ;the places ,where before the rain water ran over the ground into the rivers and on to the sea ,(in a matter of hours or days),It now runs into absorbant dams or swales and saturates the ground and eventually reaches subteranean water deposits ,taking many months to do so.

Or it fills up ponds that can be used for Aquaculture.

And so a convex situation that repels water is transformed in a concave ,absorbant one and turning the area in to a sponge.

in Spain and Portugal ,which still display many examples of the conquering Moorish influence,One can find many remnants of Waterharvesting, such as aquaducts and tanks underneath the patios ,which collect the rain water from the roofs ,to be used in dryer times.

in Arabia ,on a large scale ,land has been shaped to catch and lead, rain water into sandy areas or to agricultural lands.sand is almost as good as dams because it absorbs water and holds it.

You make it sound like water is a single-use substance, like once you%26#039;ve bathed in it, it%26#039;s gone from this planet forever.
Reply:I enjoy bathing in acid rain with mold and pollen and dust and smog in it. And the added benefit of bacteria growth, when it is collected and sets around for a while, adds to the spring fresh smell that makes my skin and hair feel so alive and crawling. This is truly the water that makes sun tea so inviting. Why would anyone use filtered chlorinated tap water with all the hazards it has to offer?
Reply:Do you???

Collecting rain water is all very good, but unless you %26quot;care for%26quot; your water, all you are doing is taking pure rain water, making it dirty with soap and bacteria from your body, then releasing it untreated back into the environment.

You may be saving money, but you are NOT saving the environment. You are not reducing your consumption one drop. All you are doing is collecting a small amount of rainwater before it flows into a municipal reservoir or aquafer. Collecting rain water is NOT reducing your consumption.

Mother Nature gave you a gift of clean rain water and you gave her back contaminated water. I think you need to learn a lot more about water usage and environmentalism.
Reply:i live in an apt i can%26#039;t use rain water to bathe as you so carefully put it so you take baths for the both of us ok?
Reply:Nothing to worry about. Global warming is melting the polar ice caps providing us with way more water now.

Water never dissapears, it is constantly recycled over and over. So it is never %26quot;wasted%26quot;. Didnt you ever learn about the water cycle in 4th grade? The next glass of water you drink just might have been the same water that passed through a Dinosaurs pee hole.

1 there are others in the world that collect their rain water. but in the US its mostly to save money and they use the collected water for their lawns

2 water is a naturally occurring substance H2O hydrogens bond with oxygens to make water. that stuff doesnt magically come from the sky

3 cirrculation. water from the ground (including the water people use for their bathing) evaporates into the air and condenses and falls back to the ground. and repeat

I'm going to start a 20 gallon long tank and i want it planted...does anyone have tips or ideas?

i%26#039;m not sure what type of fish, plants, fertilizers to get. (yeah and i know about co2 i have a homemade setup) i also have a 55g (2 cats and 5 swordtails) had more but they got sick and a few died off. I also have a 10g fry tank wish about 14 green swordtail fry, java moss and hornwort, but i%26#039;m giving most of them away as a gift.

I%26#039;m going to start a 20 gallon long tank and i want it planted...does anyone have tips or ideas?
You may not have realized how big of a question that really is.... LOL Here%26#039;s some basics.

The best way to go about a planted tank is to decide on the inhabitants first, both fish and plants. Changing gears halfway through setup is a pain.

Lighting is really the biggest consideration, because it will determine what plants you can use. With a 20-Long you have a good amount of room for lights.

The most common %26#039;rule of thumb%26#039; for lighting is actually pretty bad because it isn%26#039;t really a measure of brightness, rather it measures power consumption. It used to work when we all use normal output fluorescent lights because we had a common reference. Unfortunately, it%26#039;s still in use.

So, fallibility of the rule aside, if the plants you want are high light, you should go for 4 watts per gallon or better. Around 3 wpg will have you in the medium realm, and anything 2 wpg and under should be counted as low light. These values would be different for a larger tank - part of why the %26quot;rule%26quot; is bad.

Since you will be using DIY for your CO2, you shouldn%26#039;t have to worry about over-gassing the tank. The more efficiently you can diffuse it the better off you will be - no point in wasting it. By the way - no airstones. They will off gas your CO2 as fast as you can put it in.....

There are 2 different areas to address on Ferts.

Macros, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. (N:P:K) In a heavily planted injected high light tank, you will most likely need to dose N and K. Odds are that fish food and waste, along with tap water will give you all the P you need, and your fish will contribute to the N.

Micros are the other nutrients - products like Flourish or Leaf Zone will take care of that.

I dose everything as dry ferts. It is way cheaper. A pound of the ones you need will last forever in a 20g tank. I get mine from Greg Watson. http://www.aquariumfertilizer.com/Store....

For Macros I use Potassium Nitrate (KNO3) and Potassium Chloride (KCl). I have also got Mono Potassium Phosphate (KH2PO4) on hand, but I have not been using it lately since the city is being kind enough to supply me with Phosphates in my tap water. :(

I use Greg Watson%26#039;s Plantex CSM+B for micros. It%26#039;s the most expensive of the ones I use, but you only use a tiny bit, so a pound will last a few years.

Dosing is really easy, just use a measuring spoon, add the stuff to a bit of water and stir. You can also pour it in the tank dry and let it dissolve.

As for the plants - there is a site called PlantGeek - they have a lot of information, and I have always found it to be extremely accurate. maybe because they are not trying to sell you anything? http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php Plants are sorted by various criteria, from the linked page - very handy.

As far as fish goes... I would just avoid anything known to dig a lot, and of course no %26#039;lawnmowers%26#039;. Stick with Omnivores and Carnivores and you will be fine.

It%26#039;s always a wise idea to keep an eye on your CO2 levels - fortunately you can get an idea where you are with this by a pH and a KH (Alkalinity) test.

There is a cool planted tank chart and calculator that you can get free from http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant...

It has CO2 charts, and also some excellent links too.

[EDIT]

As if this needed to be longer... LOL!

Flourite and Eco-Complete are basically nutrient rich substrates. You could accomplish much the same thing over time with gravel as mulm builds in it, or you could use sand and put fertilizer spikes in that.

I have tanks with both brands in - and I have been very satisfied with them. They%26#039;re pricey, but they do make a difference in rooted plant growth.

I only use it in small tanks tho - a bit too pricey for a big tank - the benefits aren%26#039;t all that great. :)
Reply:yes plant it in the garden plenty off water but i carnt promise that it will grow
Reply:Here%26#039;s a thread about (what I think is) an inspirational 20 gallon long tank: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/photo-...

As for plants, you%26#039;ll want ones that can tolerate the level of light that you have and can survive on DIY CO2. Use this plant guide to find plants based on different categories: http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php

For fertilizers, the best way to go are dry ferts. They are in powder form and are the %26quot;pure%26quot; form of the nutrient. You%26#039;ll need macro nutrients (carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur) and micro nutrients (Sodium, Copper, Boron, Nickel, Chlorine, Zinc, Manganese, Iron, and Molybdenum). Good dry ferts to staert out with are: KH2PO4, Plantex CSM+B, K2SO4, KNO3 (only if you have low nitrates), and Mg2SO4 (optinonal; will raise water hardness).

If you don%26#039;t want to get dry ferts, then you can alway go the liquid route. Flourish is a good macro/micro nutrient provide and is usually found in Petsmart for around $8.99/bottle. Read the company info here: http://www.seachem.com/products/product_...

As for fish, any freshwater community fish would work. I personally like Neon Tetras, Celestial Pearl Danios, Clown Killifish, and German Blue/Bolivian Ram (sensitive to water quality, don%26#039;t try if you%26#039;re a beginner).

E-mail me for any questions!

EDIT: I have Flourite in my tank and I love it. It%26#039;s a nice natural color, and the plants love it.

However, one substrate that seems to be loved by advanced plant keepers is ADA AquaSoil Amazonia: http://www.adgshop.com/Aqua_Soil_Amazoni...

Any special care for one of those $10 "Good Luck" bamboo house plants?

I recently bought a good female friend of mine one of those %26quot;Good Luck%26quot; bamboo plants that you can pick up at any local drug store. She really appreciated it and has it on her desk at work. Outside of adding water periodically, is there anything else we could do to help it grow quicker and/or stronger? As it grows will we have to transfer it to a larger base? Nothing special but it was a special gift from the heart so any help would be appreciated.

Any special care for one of those $10 %26quot;Good Luck%26quot; bamboo house plants?
Tips:

1. Never put it in direct sunlight.

2. Use de-stilled water, tap water can have too high of a fluoride level.

Lucky Bamboo only live for around 3 years and grow very slowly. You really can%26#039;t speed up the growth but adding a sprinkle of rich potting soil helps. The rooting system is not large enough to require a larger base, but you may want a larger container as it gets taller. You can cut the stalks and make unlimited clones, with the help of a rooting agent.
Reply:They%26#039;re pretty self sufficient, that%26#039;s the best part!
Reply:I received one of them and it still looks great 3 years later. About once every six months I take it out and clean out the containerand rinse the roots. Do not allow the roots to dry in the air. I like getting a wet paper towel and wrapping the bottom of the bamboo to keep the roots moist. They are fairly sturdy and if you don%26#039;t rip or break the roots they should be fine. I will also add a little bit of plant food. Just enough to give the plant a boost. I noticed that it helps it grown and get a few more leaves. Also as leaves die remember to remove them. Just gently pull them off and dispose of them. Good luck!
Reply:speak Japanese to it
Reply:my best advice, don%26#039;t think that your gonna be cursed with bad luck if it dies...

Any ideas why the rosemary, green onions and chives I planted in large planters outside didn't grow?

I used soil recommended by Home Depot person and watered as needed, but no sigh that I planted anything and it has been a couple months. My mother had a green thumb but her child really hasn%26#039;t got %26#039;the gift%26#039;.

Any ideas why the rosemary, green onions and chives I planted in large planters outside didn%26#039;t grow?
You say there%26#039;s no sign you planted anything. None of these things grow well from seeds. Onions and chives grow from %26quot;sets,%26quot; rosemary grows from cuttings. What did you plant?
Reply:Could have been squirrels, they like to plant their nuts in gardens, or birds, they like to scratch and eat seeds, and cats like to dig, scratch and poop too. I had the same problem so I put some fencing (or netting) and lay it on top. Another idea is to start them indoors in late winter (in a windowsills) so they have a chance to get a few inches tall then by spring plant them outdoors, directions are on the back of the packs, and with onions, it%26#039;s best to buy young bulbs and start them that way, Always make sure they get pleanty of sun light in or outdoors. It too depends on where you are located.
Reply:Are the planters in the shade. You may need to move them into the sun. Do you know what was in them before and did you rinse them out thoroughly before you put in the new soil? Any snail trails on the top of the soil. Your plant%26#039;s little heads could be being nipped off in the morning before you get a look at them. Did the person at Home Depot recommend that you grow the seeds in seed mix, which is sort of sandy and very nutritious and then transplant them into ordinary soil when they were a few cm%26#039;s tall? Have you got a cat around that could be using the box at it%26#039;s own private bathroom? Because the seeds are near the top of the soil, it has to be kept very moist all the time until the roots develop. Does your soil absorb water? I bought some that the water just ran straight through and lost all my coxcomb and clarkia. That%26#039;s all I can think of right now that could have gone wrong. I hope it%26#039;s a help
Reply:They like full sun so in a shady spot they may not do so well. The plants probably need some of those food sticks you push right down into the soil, you can get them at walmart for like 88 cents. Do your pots have drainage holes in the bottom? That will help as well.

Dont give up though. I tried growing lavender from seed 3 different times and the 4th pack was a winner. Maybe it was something in the packing (if you used seeds)

How do i look after a Jewel Orchid?

My boyfriend bought me a Jewel Orchid as a gift and i have never looked after plants apart from Cactus, which in all fairness don%26#039;t need looking after.

does anyone have any tips for looking after this type of orchid or orchid in general?

I.E... how do i water them, how many times a day, best place to keep them etc.

Thanks in advance

How do i look after a Jewel Orchid?
Place your %26quot;Jewel Orchid%26quot; in bright filtered light. Avoid placing your plant in an area with cold drafts or to near a cold window. Your %26quot;Jewel Orchid%26quot; should produce 3 to 5 flower spikes once a year between November and January. Check for watering weekly allowing the surface of the soil to dry. Feed bi-monthly with Orchid Food. Stem cuttings can be rooted in a container of water or vermiculite.
Reply:Well Orchids are very easy to maintain, keep them away from cold weather and away from direct sunlight. I keep mine outside but i live in Malaysia but they love this weather they grow like never before, well I water them once a week and i soak the lower part of the pot in water for half an hour every now and then and spray them every 3- 4 days. Also put organic sheep fertilizer in it and charcoal is very important, and good luck. Hope it works with you.

HELP ME I cant find the perfect mothers day gift.?
If she is in to birds and plants, they have these wild bird stores in many areas who carry lots of different things.

What about music or jewelry?

There are also many gift cards out there for favorite restaurants, manicures and pedicures, depending on your finances, you can always include a gift card in a small plant.
Reply:get her a bird house or one of those dangling things that bang in the breeze with bird houses on it. You could also go to one of those craft places and make her a craft like a cup or something a plate something just for her. I am a Mother that is 54 years old. I just love for my children to be with me or a visit or a call will do just to know they are thinking about me , that%26#039;s enough for me. 54 year old mother in Washington
Reply:Make her a homemade card and picture or something. Homemade gifts come from the heart and really mean something rather than those cheap thing you find in the store!
Reply:Take a picture of yourself and sibling if you have any, to a shop that will convert your picture into a puzzle, or take a picture of her prized birds or plants with you in the pic and have it put on a display plate. If she likes plants does she have a garden? If so how about a garden stone with a painting of her favorite bird. This way its personal and heart felt.
Reply:You could take her out for dinner. Or spend time with her. Most mothers will enjoy whatever their child/children get them. Whether its a nice evening at home, or doing something nice for them.
Reply:On the radio this morning they decided that the perfect gift is a day off! Can you pull that one off???? Deal with all of her issues for one day, take away her phone(s) and let her be her....

Do you stand by a friend who has been charged with cannabis cultivation?

I met a guy on line a couple of years ago and although we have never met we have exchanged emails, gifts and phone calls. It would never be a sexual relationship but we had lots of similar interests and are great friends. Recently he told me he had been charged with cultivation of 50 plants for commercial purposes and I understand he has funded his lifestyle in the past from proceeds of drug deals. I know my phone number and emails are on the records taken by the police and although I want to stand by him I also feel betrayed.

I live in Australia and was wondering what the penalty is likely to be and should I stand by him - he has lost alot of friends over this.

Do you stand by a friend who has been charged with cannabis cultivation?
i think if you 2 a good friends you shouldnt let this get in the way of your friendship but as long as you dont get hurt or in trouble at the same time... good luck!!

p.s i would stand by my friends the whole way!!
Reply:Although I don%26#039;t think that smoking marijuana is the worst thing (drug-wise) that a person can do, growing 50 plans for commercial purposes is a different story. It really comes down to a question of morals. Are you comfortable continuing a friendship with a person who intended to sell drugs to finance his lifestyle? I personally wouldn%26#039;t, but that%26#039;s a judgement call on your part. Had this been a person that you had known for quite some time and had actually met and had a long-standing friendship with, I would say stand by him. However, this is a person that you met online and have never come in contact with. I don%26#039;t think that you sending emails and talking to him on the phone is grounds for any kind of trouble from the law, but I wouldn%26#039;t want the drama that could come of it. You should also consider the fact that he has lost other friends over this. People that he (I%26#039;m assuming) knew well. There is a reason they backed off. Who%26#039;s to say this is his first conviction? Maybe the fact that his other friends have cut ties should be a clue as to what type of person this man is. As far as the punishment he is facing, it really depends on the state he lives in and his past criminal record, if any.
Reply:Let me put it this way. If I were considering hiring someone, and that person had a conviction for cannabis cultivation, that would NOT stand in my way of hiring him. What he did was against the law, but that was not necessarily a moral or ethical violation. I think you should support him. He probably needs that right now. Remember he is now at the mercy of an extremely evil government and help him if possible.
