Please help! How can I revive my Juniper Bonsai??

Hi everyone,

My juniper bonsai I only got as a gift a week ago. Since then, I%26#039;ve watered it once, and kept it indoors. I realise now, that was the wrong thing to do, however the leaves have begun to turn yellow, and ~.5 of the plant is pale green, mostly the top. It%26#039;s not dead yet, is it? Can I revive it? I%26#039;ve watered it again, and moved it outside. But please, any advice to restore it back to it%26#039;s previous health would be much appreciated. Please!! Thanks.

Please help! How can I revive my Juniper Bonsai??
You have done the right thing by moving it outside. You have only had it 1 week, so your watering practices are %26quot;not%26quot; the cause of the yellowing as previous answerer%26#039;s have stated. It will take more than a couple of watering%26#039;s to show signs that it is getting too much water. There are a couple reasons why your juniper bonsai%26#039;s needles are turning yellow. One is of course, not enough water, but we have thrown that one out at the present time as mentioned above. The second reason is that it may have a %26quot;spider mite%26quot; problem. Mites love juniper. Take a piece of white paper and hold it under the tree or a horizontal branch. Lightly tap the branch and see if any tiny black specks appear on the white paper. If so, watch closely to see if they begin to move around. If this is so, you have spider mites. You can buy a mitacide at a garden center if needed. The third possibility is rot. Junipers are susceptible to a few root or crown rots as well as blights. If this is so and I hope not, there%26#039;s not alot you can do about it once it is established in the plants circulatory system. Another reason my be that by having it inside for more than 1 or 2 days it was not getting the direct sunshine that it needs to be healthy (photosynthesis). You can bring it inside for %26quot;display%26quot; purposes for 1 or 2 days, but only when it appears healthy and vigorous. Then, it needs to go back out in the direct, early morning sunshine for a couple of weeks straight. As far a your watering practices go, water them when the soil is dry 1%26quot; below the surface (check every couple of days with your finger)... Hope this answers your question...

PS... Do not scratch the branching, this will cause %26quot;scaring%26quot; and will take away from the artistic and natural look of your specimen.

Reply:Let the soil get dry before you water it next. It should be dry to the touch before you water it. Do not let it stay dry for over a 3 day period. Twice a week sounds about right for a sunny week. Too much water gives it root rot. Too little obviously kills it. Its a tree. If you do those simple things it will continue to thrive outdoors.
Reply:Hi:

I have to agree with the first answer, you are overwatering the Juniper Bonsai. A Juniper is drought tolerant once the roots are established. When leaves turn yellow, that could be a sign that the plant has too much water.

Check to see the condition of the Bonsai by taking your fingernail and scratch the surface of a branch. If it is green, it is healthy. If it is brown, it could be in shock. Also, plants when they have a change in environment will also sometimes go into shock. If you climate is warm enough, you can leave it outdoors. A Juniper can take full sun or partial shade.

I do think it is under some form of shock. You could also try to replant it. Use some light weight potting soil with no bark. Add some vermiculite and humus to the soil. Use some warm water the first few weeks. Let the soil completely dry out before watering again.

I hope this has helped some. I will link you to the gallery of plants section of my website. There is a page on Junipers that you might be able to get some information on this plant specimen. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if there are any other tips, techniques or other articles that will help you. Good luck in reviving your Bonsai and have a great day!
