Do you stand by a friend who has been charged with cannabis cultivation?

I met a guy on line a couple of years ago and although we have never met we have exchanged emails, gifts and phone calls. It would never be a sexual relationship but we had lots of similar interests and are great friends. Recently he told me he had been charged with cultivation of 50 plants for commercial purposes and I understand he has funded his lifestyle in the past from proceeds of drug deals. I know my phone number and emails are on the records taken by the police and although I want to stand by him I also feel betrayed.

I live in Australia and was wondering what the penalty is likely to be and should I stand by him - he has lost alot of friends over this.

Do you stand by a friend who has been charged with cannabis cultivation?
i think if you 2 a good friends you shouldnt let this get in the way of your friendship but as long as you dont get hurt or in trouble at the same time... good luck!!

p.s i would stand by my friends the whole way!!
Reply:Although I don%26#039;t think that smoking marijuana is the worst thing (drug-wise) that a person can do, growing 50 plans for commercial purposes is a different story. It really comes down to a question of morals. Are you comfortable continuing a friendship with a person who intended to sell drugs to finance his lifestyle? I personally wouldn%26#039;t, but that%26#039;s a judgement call on your part. Had this been a person that you had known for quite some time and had actually met and had a long-standing friendship with, I would say stand by him. However, this is a person that you met online and have never come in contact with. I don%26#039;t think that you sending emails and talking to him on the phone is grounds for any kind of trouble from the law, but I wouldn%26#039;t want the drama that could come of it. You should also consider the fact that he has lost other friends over this. People that he (I%26#039;m assuming) knew well. There is a reason they backed off. Who%26#039;s to say this is his first conviction? Maybe the fact that his other friends have cut ties should be a clue as to what type of person this man is. As far as the punishment he is facing, it really depends on the state he lives in and his past criminal record, if any.
Reply:Let me put it this way. If I were considering hiring someone, and that person had a conviction for cannabis cultivation, that would NOT stand in my way of hiring him. What he did was against the law, but that was not necessarily a moral or ethical violation. I think you should support him. He probably needs that right now. Remember he is now at the mercy of an extremely evil government and help him if possible.
