Is it rude for a neighbour to ask you to watch his cockroach infested apartment?

I have a neighbour-family who im friendly with, they asked to watch their cat while away..i live in an apartment building, i said ok,, There was about 30 cockroaches all over their kitched crawling on the poor cat.. I screamed. I ran downstairs and sprayed them with roach spray and put traps all around.. They also asked to water their plants, there were waterbugs and cockroaches crawling in their daughters bedroom. I put traps there too....

I have no bugs, i clean my apartment and spray roach roach spray and have not had 1 roach in a year. so its not my building.. They came back and broght me flowers and a gift for taking care of the apartment. I told them "you have a roach problem" they look surprised and said oh its the people next door-its BS, if it was they would have put traps around and they didnt, their just dirty. I told them i had to buy traps and spray, Isnt it wrong they asked me to watch their roach trap apartment? i dont want to talk to them anymore.

It is rather presumptuous to think they had no roaches. Decline in the future
Reply:I would say don't watch the apartment in the future. You kept their plants and kitty alive. Graciously accept the gift and give your self a pat on the back for doing your neighbors a service.

You were not asked to play Mrs. Exterminator. Although it would be right for them to compensate you, they do not "have" to. You can mention the roach problem to your neighbors, but sadly, their standards of cleanliness might not mirror your own. If that is the case then report them to the board of health.
Reply:Give them the benefit of doubt. Maybe the roaches entered an empty house. Like it was dark for a long time. Just analyzing.

If you were friends, I was wondering if you had visited their house earlier. And if you had seen any roaches.

I am sure they had some. But if the look of surprise genuine, it may not have been such a menace. Sometimes, when other neighbors spray, roaches enter the next available drain.

Suggest you do not lose friendly neighbors for this. That is a great asset. You have done a good deed for them. they will too.

Just be friendly is my view. Never harms.
Reply:In all fairness, they only asked you to feed the cat and water the plants. That would mean you'd only be going in their apartment twice a day each day they were gone and your visits should have been a matter of minutes. It's not like they asked you to stay in their home the entire time they were away. Actually, you should be happy your neighbors even trust you enough to let you into their place when they're not there.

Maybe they genuinely didn't know they had a roach problem in their place and the only reason you saw so many was because they were probably gone for a while (like a couple of hours) before you went in there and the roaches were able to come out.

You sound pretty skittish... then again, I live in Florida where there are plenty of bugs no matter what you do.
